Doctor after Military Service: N.A. Adair. Medical testimony states " That I have permanently acquainted with said John North and have given him professional care for years at intervals for chronic diarrhea...disabled to 1/3 degree" Dated April 7th, 1884

Doctor before Military Service: James McKilrick (or McKilnick),M.D. of Chauncey, Ohio. States he was the family physician for several years BEFORE Military service and John North had no signs of Chronic Diarrhea or Piles

Ronald Bruce North stated to grandson James North that the only person John North knew he killed for certain was an opposing Civil War soldier, opposite him across a ravine. Both were trying to load their guns to shoot first. In the interest of quickness (and his life) he didn't remove the ram-rod used to pack the ammunition into the gun, and fired, thus spearing the enemy across the ravine and killing him.

Ronald Bruce also said to James North, that John North spoke of a time that they (soldiers) had found a way to attach two canon balls together with a chain. They packed them both into the canon and fired it. The canon balls on each end of a now spinning chain "cut a ten foot swath through the enemy, cutting some of them completely in half". He stated that the result was so gruesome and brutal that they didn't use that any more.

1870 Census shows a boarder by the name of Johnathan Harris (probably Sarah's brother), he is 23 years old and occupation is a Farm Laborer

John applied on September 30, 1881 for a disability pension siting piles, chronic diarrhea, lung and liver ailments contracted while he was a prisoner at Libby Prison after his capture at The Battle of Gettysburg. A year and a half later ( June 24th, 1883 ), he was granted $2.00/ month and arrears paid back to his application date. His pension was re-issued on On May 18, 1887, at $6.00/month arrears paid back to his application date in 1881 to April 6th, 1887. At the same time, he was given an increase to $8.00/month payable from the April 6th, 1887 to current month of the same year. On September 11, 1888 he was again increased in pension to $10.00/month, arrears were paid dated to June 6, 1888. On December 4, 1890, another increase to $ 12.00/month and paid arrears of increase back to June 4, 1890 were paid to John. The fee noted on this file next to each increase application and grant was $10.00 (to the attorney?). For the next fifteen years John would continue to apply for increases to his pension (January 8th, 1891, October 19th, 1892, and on May 17th, 1897, July 18th, 1905) from the set $12.00 per month, siting the disproportionately low rate he was receiving compared to other pensioners for similar disabilities and adding rheumatism and heart trouble to his list of ailments. No increase was ever given. When John was 71 years old, he made his last request for an increase in his pension on July 18th, 1905, less than six months before his death.

Pension as Widow:

One month and three days from her husbands death, Sarah Maris Harris North applied for his pension as his widow. John had been receiving $12.00 a month in pension since December in 1890. Widows, however, did not qualify for full pensions. It took Sarah about a year to be approved for John's pension, and she was only allowed $8.00 per month. She had applied for accrued pension though, and her check was for $91.00, mailed to her on January 16th, 1907. The "Act of September 8, 1916" allowed Sarah's pension to be raised to $20.00 per month. At some point between 1916 and her death in 1922, her pension was raised to $30.00 a month. She no longer lived on the two acre farm that she inherited from John after his death, and resided in Stewart, Athens County, Ohio, with her daughter and son in law, Marcella and Roy Roberts. Her final pension check arrived on March 4th, the day she died, and had to be returned by the Postmaster. There wasn't enough money to bury her and pay her last medical bills so her son William North applied for a Pension Reimbursement on March 31st, 1922. Sarah's unpaid doctor bill came to $14.00. The application William sent in said that Ezra McDaniel, undertaker of Amesville, was owed $196.00 for her burial as well, totalling $210.00. The county paid $100.00 of Sarah's burial, and the Pension office sent a check for $187.00 as reimbursement ($91.00 accrued pension, plus $96.00 remaining burial fee).

Mrs. David H. North, 62, a lifelong resident of Chauncey and vicinity passed away at her home in this city Friday evening at 4 o'clock after a few weeks serious illness. Mrs. North had been in poor health for several months, suffering from gall stones and a general break down but had been able to assist in their store business up until the last few weeks. Mrs. North and her husband have conducted a grocery and restaurant business in this city for the past several years and through her accommodating manner, geniality and generosity, Mrs. North had gained a wide circle of friends who regret very much to learn of her passing.

Mrs. North is survived by her husband, D. H. North and eight daughters as follows: Mrs. Hattie Tittle, Mrs. Bess Green, Mrs. Neil McConaha, Mrs. Marie Chapman, Mrs. Nola Locke (or Lacke?), Mrs. Clara Young, Mrs. Dora Davis and Mrs. Neva Sweeney, all residing in Chauncey and vicinity, with the exception of Mrs. Chapman who is a resident of Glouster. Their only son, John, met death in the Chauncey mine several years ago. Mrs. North is also survived by a brother, Peter Breaker (sic?), and the following sisters: Mrs. Thomas Dickerson, Mrs. George Shafer, Mrs. Ervin Pidcock and Miss Alma Breaker (sic?). Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the Chauncey M. E. church and burial will be in the Nye cemetery in this city.

OBITUARY: Athens paper 5/24/1923
Once more the Angel of Death has entered our home and took from us our dearest treasure there - Our Mother.
Mary Belle Bricker, daughter of John H. and Maltilda Bricker, was born Oct. 17, 1860: departed this life for a better world, April 13th, 1923, aged 62 years, five months and 27 days,
Her entire life was spent near the place of her birth in Athens county. She was united in marriage to David H. North, November 26th, 1881. To this union were born ten children, Bessie Green, Nola Lock, Nellie McConaha, Clara Young, Dora Davis and Neva Sweeney, of Chauncey: Lurline Chapman, of Glouster and Hattie Tittle of Beaumont, two children having gone on before, Stella, when but a babe, and John Henry, when 16 years of age, their only son. There is also left her husband to whom she has always been a true and faithful helpmate and a loving companion, also 22 grandchildren, besides four sisters and three brothers: Bertha Shafer, Myrtle Pidcock, Alma Bricker and Peter Bricker of Beaumont: William Bricker of The Plains: Owen Martin, of New Marshfield, and Rose Dickerson of Chauncey. Father and mother, tow brothers and one sister preceded her to her Heavenly home. There are also left many relatives and friends who mingle their tears with those of the family in this, their time of great sorrow. But may we all bow in humble submission to the will of God and say, "Thy will be done." We have that blessed assurance that our dear mother was prepared and ready to go. During the last few years her health did not permit her to enjoy the privilege of attending divine worship as often as she would have liked, but she lives a true Christian life daily. She gave her heart to God years ago and during her last sickness she said she was ready to go. She never shrank from duty or tired of doing good at all times. She was a true friend and neighbor, a loving wife in the home. The pride of her heart was her children. During her last sickness of several weeks, she was fully conscious of all happenings about her until a short time before her death. She would watch and wait for some of her children to come, never murmuring of anything concerning herself. May she rest with God, being ready to meet him.

BLAME FOR DEATH PLACED ON BOY

Coroner Phillips returned last evening from Chauncey where he was called to investigate the death of John North, 16, who was killed by a fall of slate in Mine No. 275 yesterday morning. The coroner found that the boy, who was a loader, had been in the habit of riding about the mine entries on cars against Th law and despite repeated warnings from his father and other.
