Elijah McClain age 77 years died Thursday.  Funeral

services will be held Sat. at 10 at the M E church and

burial in the Plains Cemetery.  The deceased is survived

by two sons Linzy of The Plains and Curtis of Sugar

Creek; also three daughters, Mrs. Esther Llewellyn of

New Marshfield; Mrs. Electa Marks of Parkersburg, WV and

Mrs. Maud Terry of Nelsonville, Ohio.  His wife preceded

him several years in death.

Moody McClain was not found on 1880 census Braxton County, WV but no death record for him found in Braxton. Also no birth's for any of the children except him. Elijah is listed as a Farmer in 1877 when Moody was born.

Notes for ELIZABETH MARKS:

she supposedly died in WV. Amanda Pickett remembers her husband, Charles Curtis getting up one moring (in Athens County, Ohio) and saying he had to go to WV because his mother had died. Amanda asked how he knew this and he said that a little blue light had appeared outside the window in the night and he knew it was his Mother and she was dead. He road the rail (hitched a ride on the train) to WV and she was indeed dead. Exact location not known.

Mrs. Thomas Lewellyn

Dies on Wednesday

Mrs. Thomas J. Lewellyn, age 67, died at her New Marshfield home Wednesday evening after an illness of several weeks. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Lewellyn is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Otha Dinsmoor, Mrs. Daisey Pidcock and Mrs. Ruth Dinsmoor, all of New Marshfield, and Mrs. Evelyn Flanders, of Huron, O.(Ohio); four sons, Kendall, New Marshfield; Ezra, of Athens, and Chandos and Raymond at home; two brothers, Linsey and Curtis McLain, of Athens, and North Industry, O (Ohio), and 18 grandchildren. One son, Charles, died 22 years ago. Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday in the Methodist Protestant Church with Rev. Ray Huff officiating. Burial will be in The Plains Cemetery. James Linzy's headstone is a small square, flat stone, face up, measuring about 8 inches across. It is located near the Southeast corner of the McClain plot at The Plains Cemetery in The Plains, Athens county, Ohio. The only other stone visible in the plot in 2002 was his sister Esther McClain and her husband Thomas Llewellyn (share a headstone).

"Chauncey, Jan. 27 - Short services were held at the grave in Greenlawn cemetery yesterday noon for Mrs. Clara Bridge McClain who succumbed in Columbus Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Simpson, where she had been making her home.

   Her body was brought here from Columbus yesterday morning. Mrs. McClain formerly lived at Circle Hill and The Plains and had many friends in this vicinity, a number of whom attended the services yesterday."

"Sugar Creek Woman Was Making Home With Daughter In Columbus."

"Chauncey, Jan. 25 - Mrs. Linzy McClain, 50, Sugar Creek, died Tuesday morning at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Simpson. Mrs. McClain had been in failing health for several months and last October went to Columbus to be with her daughter.

   Funeral services will be held this evening at 7 o'clock at the home of her daughter in Columbus, and on Thursday morning the body will be  brought here, and short services held at the grave at 11 o'clock in Greenlawn cemetery where burial will be made.

   Mrs. McClain was a former resident of The Plains and Circle Hill and has many relatives and friends in this vicinity. The casket will be opened after the arrival of the funeral party.

  Mrs. McClain leaves her husband, one son, Hannas McClain of Athens, and two daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Simpson and Mrs. Preston Bentley, both of Columbus. She also leaves five brothers."

Union Miner succumbs Wednesday Night at Home in Mill Street

Chauncey: June 5, Elmer Marks, a union miner and for a number of years

a resident of Chauncey, died last night at his house in Mill Street. He

had been in ill health for several months and was living with his son and

daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Marks. He came to Chauncey from the

vicinity of Carbondale. As yet no funeral arrangements have been

announced.

Chauncey June 8- The Rev. N.O. Warren, of Chester, former pastor of the

Chauncey M.E. Church, conducted funeral services for Elmer Marks, 56,

held in Chauncey, Friday afternoon. Burial was made at the cemetery in

Hocking.

Mr. Marks succumbed in the home of his son and daughter -in-law Mr. and

Mrs. Thomas Marks in Mill Street Wednesday night. He is survived by his

son, a step-daughter Mrs. Merle Baum? of Parkersburg, WV. one sister,

Mrs. Barnhouse of Wellston, two brothers Elsa Marks of Wellston and Hirma

Charles McClain

Charles McClain Rites to be held on Tuesday

age 60, Sugar Creek, died Sunday evening following a

years illness.  He was born in Frametown on the Elk

River, WV, and came to Athens county as a child.  He

spent his entire life here, working in the coal mines. 

He is survived by his widow, three children, Mrs.

Florence McLean of Sugar Creek, John McClain of Oil City

Pa and James McClain of Canton; six grandchildren, one

step daughter and six step grandchildren.  Funeral

services will be held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock

at the Sugar Creek Methodist Church with burial in St.

Augustine's Cemetery.  Feb. 12, 1940

 

 

Note: daughter Florence McLean states burial was on Feb. 14th in the midst of the biggest blizzard they had all year.
