From the Topeka Capital - Journal Topeka, Kansas Friday, October 2, 1981 MCLOUTH - Mrs. Hazel M. VanDruff, 81, McLouth, died of natural causes Thursday at her home. She was born May 10, 1900, in the Walnut Creek community near McLouth, the daughter of Martin and Rosa McDaniel Garrett. She lived in the McLouth community for 60 years. Mrs. VanDruff was a member of the United Methodist Church, Alcione Chapter No. 266 of the Order of Eastern Star and Ladies Auxiliary to Williams - Kessinger Post No. 393 of the American Legion, all at McLouth. She was married to Cornelius R. VanDruff, Oct. 27, 1922 at McLouth. He died March 18, 1964. A son, George VanDruff, was killed in action in military service in 1945 and a daughter, Mrs. Carol Fernandez, died Aug. 7, 1973. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Rose Balao, McLouth, Mrs. Vera Annis, North Little Rock, Ark., and Mrs. Clarice Dick, Perry; two sisters, Mrs. Opal Johnson and Mrs. Edyth Austing, both of Colorado Springs, a brother, Paul Garrett, Boise, Idaho, nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 P.M. Saturday at the McLouth United Methodist Church. Burial will be in McLouth Cemetery. The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Friday at Hampton-Barrett Funeral Home, Oskaloosa. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Cornelius Roger Vandruff was born September 5, 1890 at McLouth. His parents were John Wesley and Harriett Amelia Vandruff. "Neil", as most of his relatives and friends knew him, was also known to many as "Colonel". He attended the McLouth grade and High Schools, where he developed a life long love for reading. Neil was a Seaman Second Class in the United States Naval service from May 1918 to February 1919 and had been active in veterans organizations since. In 1922 Neil and Hazel Garrett were married. They became the parents of one boy, George Martin, and four girls; Rose, Carol, Vera and Clarice. George gave his life in the service of his country in 1945.
Neil had a strong love of nature and had a firm belief in a Supreme Being that had control over everything in this life and the next. He spent most of his life in this vicinity and passed away at the Winchester Hospital, March 18, 1964; age 73 years, 6 months and 13 days. He is survived by his wife, 4 daughters and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the McLouth Methodist Church on Sunday, March 22, at 2:30 P.M. with Rev. Stacy Ollar officiating. Burial in the McLouth Cemetery with a Military service.
