Notes for GOLDIE ESTER COLE: Notes from Peggy Clark "John was only married once to my grandma (Goldie), as far as the family knows. grandma was 10 yrs old at the time of her marriage, her father was in some kind of trouble w/the law (according to mom{Malinda Ellen Cass}) & wasn't able to take the whole family with him while on the run ,so he ask grandpa ( John Cass) if he would take Goldie for she was the oldest girl, grandpa did, he married her to be legal ,mom was born when Goldie was 12yrs old (per: mom an grandma) her dad died in prison age 37.
Notes for the family: as we see from birth records the family moved around alot (mom said they followed the crops for fruit & hops also worked in the CC Camps of Oregon & Washington that is where she met her 1st husband they were married 29 Nov 1933 ,when she was 17. When they finally settled in one place in the mid 40's grandpa was a commercial trout fisherman,he would put 2 bamboo canes at the stern of his boat an troll for trout,he also made his own hooks which were called "fishing dudes" (I remember quite well seeing him making them ,he did this kind of work till he retired in the 50's. He was a little an thin man, balding just had hair around the edges of his head ,his son Jack also was bald,2 of my boys are bald too.it is something that was inherited threw the "Cass" side of the family(mom said her grandpa William Sherman was also bald). She loved her Grandpa& grandma very much hated having to leave them ,she told me when she was little girl right after Mable was born they had moved back to Ark. her daddy & mama had split up (Goldie) left for her mother's place an left her w/(John) for she was a daddy's girl, so they stayed w/ William & Malinda ,an just before her grandma died she remembers going in her room to see her and her daddy told her, grandma was sick. she cried & cried when he took her out of the room. next morning Malinda was dead (even to this day she dreams of Malinda, I hear her at nite calling her grandma.) my mom is 86 yrs old has congestive heart failure & osteo-arthritis ,needs full time care on her good days she quite talkative, tried to get her to write her life history when she was able but she never had time, now it is to late. so now it is what she tells me."
