Jonathan Rutter and wife and seven children was sent to the Infirmary July 5, 1857 by the trustees of Trimble Township. Not admitted by the directors. Left on the 10th of July 1857

Thomas Lambert was admitted to Infirmary Dec. 20, 1857 by order of Directors. Residence of Athens County some 30 years. No settled place. Occupation a miller. Habits Intemperate badly burnt, healthy but destitute. Thomas Lambert left Infirmary on Own account. Cured the 20th of Jan. 1858. Burial Clothes for T. Lambert, April 6th, 1861 and coffin made by William Young. $5.00

William Wear (Weas, Weav) found dead on the bank of Ohio canal January 5, 1858. Buried in the County Burial ground. No. 2 Range One

James Tittle being sick received out door relief from Athens County Infirmary Oct. 11, 1860. Age 25 years, birthplace not stated, residence in Dover Township 2 years. Relief administered by order of G. F. Gould, Director. H. Fuller, Supt

Robert Burns from Vinton County, State of Ohio admitted June 7th, 1859 as boarder. Left March 21st, 1860

Jonas Robbins from Vinton County, State of Ohio, admitted June 7th, 1859 as boarder, left July 7, 1860.

Ellen Moore from Vinton County, State of Ohio, admitted May 7th, 1859 as boarder, left May 22, 1862.

James Tinkham was admitted to Infirmary May 6th/1857 By order of Trustees of Dover Township. Born May 1835, Aged 22 years in Dover Township Athens County Ohio. Destitute, Habits – Industrious, Present condition – Healthy with exception of Fits probably caused by worms. Enter by Order of Directors. E. F. Brown, Supt.   Died October 3rd, 1892, Interred in July, Cemetery Post No. 17

William Courts  was admitted to the Infirmary May 6th, 1857  By order of the trustees of Dover Township. Born the 28th of July, 1790, Age 66, in the Parish of mavylebone?. County of Middlesex, London, England. Present condition healthy excepting a  slight attack of Rheumatism in the right shoulder. By trade a Taylor. Habits, industrious. Temperate for the last five years with some property consisting of a set of Tailors tools and some furniture, bed and   bedding and kitchen furniture and dishes and good clothing. Enter by order of directors. E. F. Brown, Supt.  Reinstated, Nov. 21st.         1859, by order of Directors: paid? (Illegible word here..card?) to the   Superintendent forty dollars/see page 55  E.F. Brown  Supt.  On Motion resolved that William Courts now an Inmate of Infirmary be permitted to live with and be used as a member of the family of Superintendent and hereafter. Infirmary Journal page 21  W.C. having recovered, left Infirmary March 15, 1858. Being allowed is (his?) Goods and Chattels. Returned to Infirmary the 21st day of November 1859 and died March 8th, 1864. Buried in (this next part is very hard to read) grave No. 29, range 1. cause of death lung fever.

Samuel Foster age 54 years when registered. Born on the state of Ohio. Insane, the cause brought on by fits extremely indolent in person, yet healthy. Destitute having been County Charge the last 12 years. Admitted into Athens County Infirmary May 6, 1857 Entering by order of Directors. E. F. Brown, Supt Samuel Foster died the 4th of March 1858. Interment in the Athens Burial Ground Athens County (cut off here, sorry)

Betsey Drain, age 45 years when registered. Born in the state of Maryland. Insane, the cause, family difficulties, quite harmless and indolent also healthy. (Has) been a County Charge the last 5 years. Admitted into Athens County Infirmary May 6, 1857. Entered by order of Directors. Waterloo Township. E. F. Brown, Supt. “365”  Died Feb. 10, 1882. Buried in the Nye Graveyard.

Charles Miller, Age 24 years when registered. Born in Fairfield County, State of Ohio. Insane, the cause extreme study. Healthy but indolent and destitute having been a County Charge the last 4 years. Admitted into Athens County Infirmary May 6, 1857. Entered by order of Directors. York Township. E. F. Brown, Supt.  “365”   Died December 6th, 1876. Interred in Grave No. 5 of Range No. 4   

Alfred Nickols, Age 22 years when registered. Born in Athens County, state of Ohio. Insane, cause unknown. Otherwise healthy, destitute, having been a County Charge the last 6 years. Admitted into Athens County Infirmary may 6, 1857. Entered by Order of Directors.  Dover Township.  E. F. Brown, Supt.    Alfred Nickols died Sept. 25th, 1859. Interment made in the County Ground. No. 6 of Range One.   

Stephen Swett was admitted to infirmary May 7, 1857 by order of Trustees of Ames township. Born in the state of Maine 1772. Age 85 years, his habits are temperate but (page 3) indolent having a bad rupture. Been a Township Charge 5 years and destitute. Entered by order of Directors. E. F. Brown, Supt.

John Hoff and family was admitted to Infirmary May 7, 1857 by order of Trustees of Ames Township. Born in the state of Virginia 1806, age 51 years, habits temperate but rendered helpless by being fleshy. Has been a township Charge for six years, at present indolent and destitute. Adaline Hoff, his wife, age 35 years, born in the state of Ohio, habits temperate and industrious but wish to remain with her husband to take care of him and her children. William Hoff, son of the above, age 7 years, born in Athens County, state of Ohio, healthy. Wyatt Hoff, son of the above, age 3 years, born in Athens County, state of Ohio, healthy. Entered by order of the Directors: E. F. Brown, Supt. Mrs. Adaline Hoff and her two children left Infirmary Sept. 9, 1857 on her own account: John Hoff by his own accord left Infirmary Nov. 20, 1857. All being legally discharged by the board of Directors.

Caroline Green was admitted to Infirmary May 7, 1857 by order of Trustees of Ames Township. Born in Massachusetts, 1812. Age 45 years, habits temperate, indolent with deraignment, has been to the Lunatic Asylum at Columbus Ohio. Also been a township charge 4 years. Health Good but destitute. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt.  Died May 29, 1871. Interred in grave No. 34, Range No. 2

John Six was admitted to Infirmary May 11, 1857 by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Afflicted with rheumatism. Born in Pennsylvania age 52, destitute. Ester Six, his wife, born at Marietta, Washington County, State of Ohio, age 45, industrious and healthy. Martha Ellen Six, daughter of the above, born in Athens Township, Athens County, Ohio, age four years, healthy. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt.  John Six, wife and child left Infirmary Nov. 16, 1857 on their own account and finally discharged by the Directors.

Andrew Jackson, son of Belinda Fletcher, was admitted to Infirmary May 10, 1857 by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Born in Athens County 1845, age 12 years. Destitute but healthy. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. The indentures recorded in Dover Township July 2nd, 1857, page 12, Volume First (1).

Phillip Harragan was admitted to infirmary May 11, 1857 by order of Trustees. Born in Parish Castle Island, Ireland, age 30 years, habits temperate, employment farming. Destitute, residence unknown: of Athens Township, by order of the Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Phillip Harragan left Infirmary Cured on the 18th of Aug., 1857. Being discharged by the Directors.

John Dee was admitted to Infirmary May 11, 1857 by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Born in the Parish of Dingle, County of Kerry (cont. page 5), Ireland. Age 35, habits temperate, employment labouring, destitute from accident on rail road, residence unknown. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. See page 58  John Dee restored to health, Sept. 16th, 1858, being legally discharged.

Susan Dutcher was admitted to Infirmary May 11, 1857 by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Age 61 years. Temperate, industrious and healthy but destitute. Peter Dutcher, son of the above, age 20 years. Temperate partly industrious healthy. (no punctuation given for previous sentence). Born in York Township, Athens County, Ohio. Month and date not known when either was born. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Susan Dutcher departed this life July 23, 1866, cause of death old age, buried in county burial grounds. Grave No. 7 of Range No. 2. Peter Dutcher died March 13, 1892. Buried in County burial ground Post No. 12.

Elizabeth Hallett was admitted to Infirmary May 12, 1857 by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Age 34, Born in the State of Ohio. Temperate industrious and healthy but destitute. J. T. Hallett, son of the above, born in Washington County, Ohio, aged 10 years. Margarett Ann Hallett, daughter of the above, born in Washington County, Ohio, age 8 years. O. Hallett, son of the above, born in Hocking County, Ohio, age 6 years. William Hallett¸son of the above, born in Hocking County, Ohio, age 4 years. All Healthy. Former residence unknown. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt.  See page 63, 86  Margarett Ann Hallett (indentures) recorded first of August in Clerk’s book of York Township. The indentures of Jacob F. Hallett recorded in Rome Township, Nov. 10, 1857. Orastin Hallett bound to Nook Tedrow of Rome Township, Nov. 20, 1888. E. Hallett left on her own accord Aug. 9, 1859. Being legally discharged by the directors.

Levi Willison was admitted to Infirmary May 13, 1857 by order of Trustees of Lee Township, being a resident twenty four years. Intemperate in his habits. Born in the state Maryland in 1777. Age 80 years, occupation farming, has been a Township Charge for the first of last December. Healthy but destitute. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. See page 48 Levi Willison left by his own accord Aug. 17, 1857 by notice to Directors. Returned Sept. 20. Since left (on) Oct. 10, 1857 being discharged by the Directors.

James Washington Davis was admitted to Infirmary May 13, 1857 by order of Trustees of Lee Township. Born in the state of Virginia, has been a Township Charge from the first of April last(,) was left by a non resident. Age about 7 years, former residence not known, healthy but destitute. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. James Washington Davis, bound to Ruben Davis of Athens Township, farmer. On this the 17th day of November, A.D. 1860. Returned Nov. 30, 1861. By order of Directors. Left March 18, 1862 on trial. Returned March 31, 1863.

Barbery Ann Smith was admitted to Infirmary May 14, 1857 by order of Trustees of Rome Township. Born the 29th of June, 1843 in Athens County, State of Ohio. Age 14 years, healthy but destitute. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Barba Ann Smith bound to Kimpton (or Kirnpton) of Trimble Township. A bad case, see page 124.

John Paugh was admitted to Infirmary May 14, 1857 by order of Trustees of Rome Township. Born 1753, State of New York (cont.’ page 7), Day and month not known. Residence Forty years in said township. Age 104 when recorded. Helpless and destitute but temperate. We can not say indolent. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. John Paugh departed this life October 24, 1862. Interment made in the Infirmary Burial Ground, No. 20, of Range One. Cause of death Old Age. When he departed this life his age was 109 years as recorded, but his admittance paper states 95 years when received into the Infirmary.

Joseph Petty was admitted to infirmary May 14, 1857 by order of Trustees of Rome Township. Born in said township, Athens County, Ohio. Weakly in body and deaf and dumb, yet still industrious and temperate. Residence all his life in said township, age 31 years. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt.  Died Nov. 18, 1881

Archibald Dorough was admitted to Infirmary May 14, 1857, by order of Trustees of Rome Township. Born in New England in the year 1777, day and months not known, residence 40 years in said township. Age when recorded 80 years, temperate, industrious and healthy but destitute. Hannah Dorough his wife, born in New England in the year 1777, day and month not known. Residence forty years in said township. Age when recorded 80 years, temperate, healthy and industrious. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Hannah Dorough departed this life February the 2nd, 1863. Her age when died 86 years. Buried in the County Burial Ground No. 23 of Range One. Cause of death old age. Archibald Dorough died August 13th, 1866, entered in grave No. 8, R (range) 2. cause of death flux and old age.

Eliza Homer was admitted to Infirmary May 15, 1857 by order of Trustees of Waterloo Township, Athens County, Ohio. Has most distressful fits. Age 36 years, born in Morgan County. Destitute. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Eliza Homer died the 9th of June, 1857. Interment near her residence at the Radical Church Burial Ground.

Andrew McKee was admitted to Infirmary May 25, 1857 by order of the Trustees of Trimble Township. Born in Alexander Township 1817. Age 40 years. Become Insane in 1841, sent to State Asylum. Discharged uncureable. Confined in County jail one year and then became Chargeable as a pauper to Trimble Township having been a resident of said township ten years, always or partially an idiot in action but withal healthy and can earn his living by proper attendance. Destitute. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Died October 6, 1871. Entered in grave No. 6, Range No. 3

Ann Wilcox was admitted to Infirmary May 26th, 1857 by order of Trustees of Lodi Township, being a resident 25 years. Supposed age 45 years, supported by County the last four years and Township. Also an idiot but healthy being fully destitute but quite harmless. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Ann Wilcox departed this life Nov. 16, 1862. Interment in the Infirmary Burial Ground No. 24 of range One. Cause of death convulsions. Age when she died 50.

Fredirick Tubbs was admitted to infirmary May 26, 2857 by order of Trustees of Lodi Township. Born in 1773, age 84 years, resided the last 40 years in said township. Occupation farming. Habits temperate. Born in the state of New Hampshire. Destitute being fully supported the last four years by the above township. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Fredirick Tubbs departed this life on the 29th of Sept, 1861. Interment in the Infirmary Burial Ground No. 17, Range One. Cause of death old age, being 88 years, 4 months and three days.

Joseph Eator was admitted to Infirmary May 26, 1857 by order of Trustees of Lodi Township. Born in 1771. Age 86 years, blind. Resided the last 22 years in said township. Employment shoemaking and farming at present. Habits temperate. Born in Maryland. Destitute being supported the last four years by the above township. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Joseph Eator died the 1st of March, 1859. Interment in the County Ground. No. 3, Range One. Cause of death old age.

Margaret Rider was admitted to infirmary May 29, 1857 by order of Trustees of Troy township. Residence 15 years, born in the state of Pennsylvania 1777. Age 80 years. Sober and industrious. Habits- has some property such as tow feather beds, good bedding, comforts blankets and a full supply of wearing apparel but needily. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Margaret Rider died the 9th May 1859. Interment in the County Ground, No. 4 of range One.

Martha Purdam was admitted to Infirmary by order of the Trustees May 29, 2857 of Waterloo Township. Born in Perry County, State of Ohio in 1844. Age 13 years. An idiot, health good but destitute. Also William Purdam residence as above, born in Athens County 1850, age 7 years. Both have no means of support, healthy. See page 58 Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. William Purdham died the 21st of May 1860. Interment in the County Burial Ground. No. 12 of range One. Martha Prudham left Infirmary March 13, 1860 by orders and placed in Service? (light and hard to see) for good by G. Connett, Director. Cause of William Purdam death was consumption.

Nathan Howell was admitted to Infirmary June 2, 1857 by order of Trustees of York Township. Born in the state of Maryland 1781, aged 76 years. Habits industrious and temperate but destitute. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt.   Nathan Howell died the 27th of Sept. 1857. Interment at the Company’s Burial Ground.

Martha Smith was admitted to infirmary June 2, 1857 by order of Trustees of York Township. Born in Bath County, Virginia 1827, age 30 years, habits not good yet temperate, industrious and healthy but destitute. Ellen Smith, her child, born in York Township, Athens County, Ohio, age 6 years, healthy. See page 31 Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Martha Smith and child sent from Infirmary for being Negligent in person and habits not commendable. March 8, 1858. Being discharged by the Directors.

Isaiah Bradley was admitted to infirmary June 2, 1857 by order of Trustees of York (cont.’ page 11)Township. Born in Athens County state of Ohio 1832. Age 25 years. An idiot, healthy but destitute. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Isaiah Bradley died Nov. 10, 1887, age 55 years according to date of admittance. But from appearances was considerably older. Was interred in Infirmary Cemetery. R.S. Dent, Supt.

Lavina Shipman was admitted to Infirmary June 3, 1857 by order of the Trustees of Carthage Township. A resident 20 years. A native of Virginia, supported by said township the last 5 years. Decriped (decrepit) and infirm. Born 1779, aged 78 years, temperate, industrious, wholly destitute. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Lavina Shipman departed this life December 31, 1861. Age 82 years. Interment in County Ground No. 18, Range One. Cause of death with consumption and old age.

Sopronia Stout was admitted to Infirmary June 3, 1857 by order of Trustees of Carthage Township. Born in said township 1809, age 48 years. An idiot from infancy and a Charge to said Township the last 15 years. Healthy but wholly destitute. Entered by order of Directors, E. F. Brown, Supt. Saphronia Stout departed this life March 6, 1864 age 55 years. Buried in County Burial Ground range 1, No. 28. Cause of death severely burned by her clothes catching fire.

Huldah Maria Danney was admitted to Infirmary June 26, 1857 by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Born on Big Run, Muskingum County, State of Ohio, 1844. Month not known. Age 13 years. Subject to fits, health good otherwise but wholly destitute. Bound to Thomas Johnson August 20, 1857 and ran away from Johnson. She is decisively a bad case. (see entry on page 12 also)

F. Brown By order of Directors. Hulda Maria Danney (Dunney), bound to Thomas Johnson August 20, 1857 of Dover Township, Athens County, Ohio and left his service without cause or knowledge of her whereabouts. She being a bad disposed girl.

William McCombs was admitted to Infirmary July 21, 1857 by order of the Trustees of waterloo Township, age 45, born in Pennsylvania. Laborer, has fits, habits temperate but destitute. Mary McCombs, his wife, age 40 years, born in Vermont, healthy, temperate and industrious. Daniel McCombs, son of the above, age 12 years. Grizilda McCombs, daughter of the above, age 10 years. Alexander McCombs, son of the above, age 8 years. Rebecca McCombs, daughter of the above, age 6 years. All born in Pennsylvania, healthy. James E. McCombs, age 1 year, born in Athens County, State of Ohio, all needily. Entered by order of the Directors E. F. Brown Supt. See page 38. For wife and family see page 39 & 40. Wm. McCombs and all his family left Infirmary Sept. 30, 1857 on their own account being restored to health, being legally discharged by the directors

Henry Barnhart was admitted to Infirmary Sept. 10, 1857 by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Born in the State of New Jersey 1802. Age 55 years. Disease liver complaint with chills and fever. Occupation basket maker, habits not known. Residence of Athens Township the last four years. Destitute. Mary Ann Barnhart, his daughter, age 21 years, born in the state of Pennsylvania, temperate (cont’ page 13). Hurman Barnhart, age 14 years with chills and fever, his son. All needy. Entered by order of the Directors E. F. Brown Supt. Henry Barnhart died the 28th of Sept., 1857. Interment at the Company Burial Ground. Nathan Barnhart their present guardian has taken from Infirmary Mary Ann and James Barnhart Oct. 12, 1857. Cause of death the Venereal. Also Hurman Barnhart left infirmary without notice Jan. 21, 1858. Being discharged for so doing by the directors.

William Courtney was admitted to infirmary Oct. 16, 1857 by order of the Trustees of Athens Township. Born in Athens County, 1846, age 11 years, healthy but destitute. Entered by order of the Directors E. F. Brown Supt. See page 47 Wm. Courtney bound to Noah Tedrow of Rome Township. Ran away, indentures given up by directors April 10, 1858

Alexander B. Miller was admitted to Infirmary Oct. 20, 1857 by order of Trustees of York Township, born in Pennsylvania, age 31 years and a resident of York Township, Athens County 20 years. Habits intemperate, many years afflicted with fits and disease of the nervous system so as to deprive him of earning a living, therefore destitute. Entered by order of the Directors E. F. Brown Supt. Alexander B. Miller died on the 5th of May 1860, Interment in the Athens County burial ground No. 11, of Range one. Cause of death the Venereal.

Margaret Burk was admitted to Infirmary Oct. 20, 1857 by order of the Trustees of Athens Township, age 30 years, intemperate but industrious, healthy but destitute, born in Ireland. City of Cork and County. William Burk her son, age 2 years, born in Virginia. (cont’ page 14)

(Thomas Burk) Returned to friends with his mother and brother April 10, 1858, having a legal discharge from the Infirmary.

John Cain was admitted to Infirmary November 13, 1857 by order of the Trustees of Dover Township, Athens County, State of Ohio. Born in the State of Pennsylvania, August 5, 1839. Age 18 years, habits sober, industrious. Present condition unhealthy cause by Ague, therefore destitute. Entered by order of the Directors E. F. Brown Supt. John Cain sent from Infirmary March the 8th 1858 for being filthy in person, by order of the Directors, they granting his discharge.

William Bates was admitted to infirmary December 22, 1857 by order of Trustees of Alexander Township, Athens County, Ohio. Born in Muskingum County, has been a resident of said Township and this county 10 years, whose age is 21 years, is troubled with epileptic fits, has had them occasional for six years that they have injured his mind, his previous habits have been regular but from exposure and such causes there is no dependence in him. He also owns or is heir to one sixth of a tract of land lying in Alexander Township, Athens County, State of Ohio, containing 60 acres, but withall needy, Entered by order of the Directors E. F. Brown Supt. William Bates left the Infirmary without notice January the 22nd, 1858, being discharged for so doing by the Directors.

Martha Oard was admitted to infirmary January 10, 1857 by order of the Trustees of Athens Township, Athens County, State of Ohio, age 26 years. Born in Pennsylvania and A. P. Sams, her child born in Athens County, aged 2 years and at present destitute. Entered by order of the Directors E. F. Brown Supt. Eli T. Oard born in Infirmary the 8th day of March 1858. Eli T. Oard given to Samule Deston by his mother, April 20, 1858. A. P. Sams sent to his Grandfather by order of the Directors Feb. 21, 1858. Martha Oard left with her own accord April 28, 1858, being discharged.

Margaret McLintick was admitted to infirmary March the 5th, 1858 by order of the trustees of Athens Township, Athens County, State of Ohio, age 28 years. Born in New Orleans city, state of Louisiana. Residence in Athens Township 2 years, occupation not good, habits the same, but destitute. Entered by order of the Directors E. F. Brown Supt. Margaret McLintick restored to health May 25th, 2858 being legally discharged by the directors.

Rachel Stephenson was admitted to infirmary May 24th, 1859. By order of the Trustees of Trimble Township. Born in the State of New York, age 34 years, her son Jabes born in Trimble Township, Athens County, Ohio, age 3 years last March. She is in a suffering situation not able to take care of herself and child. Present condition destitute. . Entered By order of Directors. E. F. Brown, Supt. Residence in the township 22 years, previous habits civil, half-witted creature; present condition no home, relatives or property he was warned out Aug. 1st, 1842 but gained his residence before. Cause of death was the stoppage of urine- the emission taken place from under the calf of each leg alternately.

Susan French was admitted to Infirmary Oct. 11th, 1859 by order of the Trustees of Waterloo Township, her age 36 years, birthplace Waterloo Township, length of residence in the Township cannot ascertain. Previous habits industrious. Present condition healthy but destitute, not been warned out of said township. Some years previous said Susan French was a resident of Scioto County, Ohio, how long she was there we cannot learn at the present. Entered By order of Directors. E. F. Brown, Supt. Susan French gave birth to a male child May the 3rd, 1860. Named Hugh Thompson French. The above named boy was taken out of the Infirmary by his nominal grandfather Sept. 25th, 1862. Returned at a subsequent time and died Aug. 28th, 1868. Buried in Children’s Range, No. 23. Susan French died July 14, 1871. Interred in grave No. 2 of Range No. 3.

Interred in Infirmary Cemetery post No. 16. Cause of death general debility. Ella Smith died May 14th, 1898. Interred in County Ground post No. 41.

Abbigail Hawk was admitted to Infirmary January 5th, 1860 by order of the Trustees of Lodi Township, age 21 years, birthplace New Jersey. Length of residence 4 years. Previous habits- working generally about. Present condition – pregnant which unables the said Abbigail Hawk to obtain her living. Entered By order of Directors. E. F. Brown, Supt. Abbigail Hawk gave birth to a male child Jan. 30th, 1860, named LeRoy Hawk. The above and child left the Infirmary with her own accord Feb. 21st, 1860. Being legally discharged by directors.

James Beaty was admitted to Infirmary January 18th, 1860 by order of the Trustees of Canaan Township, age 60 years, birthplace near Juniatta River, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. Length of residence 5 years. Previous habits intemperate. Present condition disabled and destitute and not been warned out. Entered By order of Directors. E. F. Brown, Supt. James Beaty died on the 27th day of April, 1861. Interment in the County Burial Ground No. 14 of Range One. Cause of death the Flux and it’s attendants.

Mary Paulk, wife of Levi, was admitted to infirmary January 20th, 1860 by order of the Trustees of Bern Township, age 31 years, birthplace Ames township, Athens County, Ohio. Residence in the township with her husband 8 years. Present condition wholly destitute of every necessary of life, never been warned out of said township. Entered By order of Directors. E. F. Brown, Supt. Mary Paulk gave birth to a male child March 29th, 1860 named Hiram Russell Paulk. Mary Paulk left the Infirmary with her two children Sept. 12th, 1860 to be married. H. R. Griffen Reeves was admitted to Infirmary April 28th, 1860 by order of the trustees of Dover Township. Age 78 years, Birthplace State of New Jersey, length of residence 30 years. Previous habits industrious, present condition diseased and destitute. Number of times said pauper has been warned out of said township unknown. Hariet Kimberly, her papers by some mistake are lost, was admitted to Infirmary in March 1859. She belonging to Alexander Township, age 16 years, birthplace not known. Been taken from the Orphan Asylum, City of New York, State of New York. Length of residence in the above township 3 years. Previous habits good. Living with Parson Williamson who took her from the said Orphan Asylum. Present condition diseased in her limbs, not having their use which has caused her present distress. She being fully destitute, having no friends or relatives. Not warned out cause being under the care of said Williamson. Entered; By Order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt.  September 5, 1868, Hariet Kimberly discharged by order of the Directors. 

Elizabeth Hoisington returned to the Infirmary July 2nd, 1860 by direction of the Trustees of Athens Township, Athens County, State of Ohio and order of George Connett, Director. See page 20 & 56. Hiram Fuller, Supt.  E. Hoisington left Infirmary with permission the 7th day of Aug., 1860. returned to Infirmary the 18th day of Oct. 1860 by her former papers and the third time of her admittance into the infirmary. Discharged by Directors June 21st, 1861.

 John Calaway returned to Infirmary July 2nd, 1860 by direction of the Trustees of Carthage Township, Athens County, State of Ohio and order from Ziba Lindley, Director. See page 28. Hiram Fuller, Supt.  See page 50. John Calaway left infirmary without notice July 13th, 1860, being a turbulent disagreeable character. Returned badly bruised by a fall and entered by his former papers on March 26th, 1861. Being the third time of admittance into the infirmary. Also a broken leg.

John Vanwormer was admitted to infirmary Sept. 1st, 1860 by order of Trustees of York Township, age 65 years, birthplace State of New York. Length of residence in the township one month. Previous habits not known. Present condition insane. Therefore has not been warned out of said township. Entered; By Order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt. John Vanwormer sent from infirmary Sept. 5th, 1860, not having a place strong enough to keep him secure. Under said circumstances had to send him to County Prison. Returned Sept. 22nd, 1860. Not admitted to Lunatic Asylum being incurable. John Vanwormer left the Infirmary Oct. 26th, 1861, being fully discharged for so doing by Directors, he having recovered from his Lunacy. 

John Cagg was admitted to Infirmary Sept. 2nd, 1860 by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Age 72 years, birthplace Pennsylvania, length of residence in the Township 20 years. Previous habits good. Present condition Old age. Has not been warned out of said township. Entered; By Order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt. See page 51 John Cagg left the Infirmary on Sept. 18th, 1860 to enter the Holy Bonds of Matrimony. Being discharged by Directors. 

Lavina R. Chevilier and child was admitted to Infirmary Sept. 18th, 1860 by order of Trustees of Troy Township , Athens County, Ohio. Length of residence in township 18 years. Previous habits not stated. Present condition unwed, unprovided for, and unable to obtain a living. Bettee Sanders was admitted to infirmary Sept. 20th, 1860 by order of Trustees of Athens Township, age 22 years. Birthplace Athens, Athens County, State of Ohio. Length of residence not stated. Previous habits good. Present condition Pregnant “no further remarks or statements noticed on certificate”. Being a native as above stated, Entered; By Order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt. Bettee Sanders gave birth to a female child Sept. 24th, 1860 named Frances Adella Fisher: Sanders. Better Sanders left the Infirmary on Oct. 24th, 1860. Taken her child with her by given due notice. Being legally discharged by directors. 

John Straton was admitted to infirmary Oct. 22nd, 1860. By order of Trustees of Athens Township as a transient pauper. Age 17 years, birthplace Ohio. Length of residence in said township a few hours. Previous habits not known but his proper residence is the town of Plymouth, Burbon Township, Marshall County, State of Indiana. Present condition unclean so much so that a full supply of clothing was found (for) him. As justice is due, I state the following; he left home with a cattle drover for Pennsylvania where he was left without means of reaching home. Entered; By Order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt. John Straton left the infirmary Nov. 5th, 1860 by notice, being with care recruited in health, in cleanliness and clothing, for home to see his kind mother and thankful for all favors received. Being legally discharged by the Directors.

John C. Campbell was admitted to Infirmary Oct. 24th, 1860 by order of Trustees of Athens Township, age 48 years. Birthplace the State of Pennsylvania, length of residence in township 10 years. Previous habits intemperate. Present condition sick with the Liver Complaint, also destitute. Has not been warned out. Being in respectable Circumstances as a Hatter and then a hair dresser and barber. Entered; By Order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt.  John C. Campbell died Jan. 23rd, 1861. Interment in the County Burial Ground, No. 13 of Range One. Cause of death the general debility from a complication of the Venereal Disease and not the lived complaint. 

William Sinclair was admitted to infirmary Nov. 1st, 1860, by order of Trustees of troy Township, age 16 years. Birthplace Monroe County, State of Ohio, residence in township One year. Previous habits not known but seems a quiet decent youth. Present condition an orphan, being sickly of course weakly. Not been warned the Trustees of Troy township has gave no reason. Entered; By Order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt.  William Sinclair received great benefit from the medical treatment that he was able to leave the Infirmary Jan. 28th, 1861. Also the above William St. Clare was bound to O. W. Bean of York township, Athens County, Ohio on the sixth day of April 1861, until of Age, being Nov. 1st, 1865 

Michael Grady was admitted to infirmary with his wife and four children Nov. 7th, 1860. By order of Trustees of Athens Township, age 40 years, birthplace Ireland. Residence in township 6 days. Previous habits not stated. Present condition destitute with the loss of left arm. Not been warned being transient. Entered; By Order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt. Michael Grady with his family received Notice to leave Infirmary on March the 25th, 1861 by orders of the Directors. Being all discharged from the said Institutions by order of the full board managers.

Michael Grady received notice to leave Infirmary in charged of his Father on March 25th, 1861, being the order of Directors.

Mary Ann Grady left the infirmary in care of her mother on March the 25th, 1861, being the orders given by the Directors.

Edward Grady, son of Michael and Ann Grady was admitted to Infirmary Nov. 7th, 1860 by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Age ten months, birthplace Waterford in the State of Maine. Condition destitute also transient. By some improper filling up of certificate, two errors have taken place. One is where Ann Mariah was born – ought to be in the State of Massachusetts instead of the State of Maine, also Michael was born in Rhode Island instead of Waterford, but all came to Athens, Athens County, Ohio from Waterford together. Entered; By Order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt.  Edward Grady left the Infirmary in care of his parents Michael and Ann Grady on March 25th, 1861. Being the given orders of Directors for all the family to leave they being only transient paupers and received such relief be that understood not permanent. Being legally discharged by the Directors. 

Alvan Bingham was admitted to Infirmary Nov. 15th, 1860, by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Born April 27th, 1782. Age 78 years when admitted. Birthplace Tinmouth, Rutland County, State of Vermont. Residence 60 years in Athens County. Present condition destitute. Previous habits temperate. I need not name so old a resident not warned ass he helped to Survey the land where Athens now stands. Entered; By Order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt.  Alvin Bingham departed this life March 1st, 1866 at ¼ after three p.m., cause of death old age. Died while eating. Buried in Grave No 7. range No. 2

Margaret Lucinda Sloker, daughter of Elizabeth Sloker, was admitted to Infirmary Dec. 15th, 1860 by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Age one year. Birthplace Meigs County, State of Ohio. Residence in the township but two days. Present condition being with her Mother wholly destitute they both being transient paupers. Entered; By Order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt. Margaret Lucinda Sloter left the infirmary Jan. 14th, 1861 with and under the care of her Mother for Meigs County Infirmary, State of Ohio. Being discharged by Directors. 

William Courtney returned to Infirmary Dec. 28th, 1860 by directions of Trustees of Athens Township, Athens County, Ohio and Order from G. J. Gould, Infirmary Director. See page 13. Hiram Fuller, Supt. William Courtney left without liberty Feb. 25th, 1861, being second time when fully clothed. Discharged by order of Directors. Abraham Johnson was admitted to infirmary January 23rd, 1861 by order of Trustees of Athens Township. Age 57, birthplace Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Residence in the township 14 years. Previous habits – what the World call’s a Good Liver and in Good Circumstances the cause he was not warned. Present condition destitute. Entered by order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt. A. W. Johnson having recruited in health and person has returned his gratitude by publishing a letter of Thanks for their kind treatment in the Athens Messenger. He retired from Infirmary on April 1st, 1861. Being discharged by the Directors. 

Levi Willison returned to Infirmary January 29th, 1861 by order of Trustees of Lee Township and order of Athens County Directors. See page 6. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Levi Willison died May 15th, 1861. Interment in the Infirmary Burial Ground, No. 15 of Range One. Cause of Death a inflammatory fever taken from a severe cold. His age when departed this life was 84 years. 

Joel Brook was admitted to infirmary February 8th, 1861 by order of Trustees of York Township. Age 22 years, birthplace Meigs County, Ohio. Length of residence 9 years, previous habits farming. Present condition sick.

Rosetta Brook was admitted to infirmary Feb. 8th, 1861 by order of Trustees of York township, age 16 years,  birthplace Athens County, Ohio. Length of residence 9 years. Previous habits not stated. Present condition sick.

Isaac Brook was admitted to Infirmary February 8th, 1861 by order of Trustees of York Township. Age 12 years, birthplace Athens County, Ohio. Previous habits farming. Present condition sick, (cont.’ on page 49)

Roxanna Brook was admitted to Infirmary February 9th, 1861 by order of Trustees of York Township, age 10 years, birthplace Athens County, Ohio. Residence 9 years. Present condition sick This family. Entered by order of Directors; Hiram Fuller, Supt. Joel Brook and the rest of the Family having recovered there healths have all been discharged by they Directors, February 1861. Roxanna Brook, having recovered her health has been discharged by order of the Directors, February 1861.

Griffen Reeves returned to the Infirmary February 20th, 1861 in a destitute condition being allowed admittance the second time from his first papers with the order of the present Directors. See page 39  Hiram Fuller, Supt. Griffen Reeves died March the 21st, 1861. Interment in Nye burial ground, Chauncey, in Dover Township, Athens County, Ohio. Cause of death- real want, brought on by his own folly in his hasty removing from the Infirmary without cause.

Ann Eliza Drain was admitted to infirmary February 13th, 1861. Age 13 years. Birthplace Athens County, Ohio. Length of residence, from birth being 13 years. Previous habits, housework. Present condition sick with typhus fever. A native, Entered from York Township by Trustees, by order of the Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Ann Eliza Drain recovered her health was discharged by the Directors Feb. 1861.

Lovina R. Chevilier and her child George E. Chevilier returned to Infirmary in a helpless condition being allowed admittance the second time from her first papers with the consent of the present Directors on March the 9th, 1861. See page 42. Hiram Fuller, Supt. George E. Chevilier born March 4th, 1860. Died April 5th, 1863. Buried in County Ground in Range No. 4. Cause of death Lung fever.

John Calaway sent to the Infirmary by a joint committee of his neighbors on March 26th, 1861 with the following memorial; Mr. H. Fuller, Sir, you are requested by the citizens of Carthage Township and Others to take this said John Calaway and keep him any other way for he is not safe to run at large he has been very near killing his Mother and sister with a fire shovel and he swears he will kill them, this the pay he gived them for taken care of him when he was confined to the house when his thigh was broke; now we the undersigned request you to due as above stated and you will oblige the following; Names, A. S. Jeffers, Township treasurer. C. B. Jeffers, L. H. Jeffers, Parker Burrows, Edward Griffen, Charles Green, William Burton, Joseph Decker, Daniel Leroy, John S. Bud Sr., James Shields, J. G. October 13th, 1867 this day John Calaway departed this life. Interred in County Burial Ground Range No. 2, grave No. 15. Cause of death, bloody flux.

Sally Frost the third time returned to Infirmary April 25th, 1861 by order of Directors. See page 35. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Sally Frost died June 21st, 1861. Interment in the Infirmary Burial Ground No. 16 of range One. The cause of death general dropsy. Her age when she departed this life was 56 years as near as her papers stated, month or date not named.

Jane Lowry was admitted to Infirmary April 22nd, 1861 by order of the Trustees of Waterloo Township, age 70 years. Birthplace State of Pennsylvania. Length of residence 32 years. Previous habits, industrious. Present condition helpless and destitute, not warned out of township. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Jane Lowry departed this life October 2nd, 1861. Interment in Nye Burial Ground North of Chauncey. Cause of death a spinal affection received from a fall. Age when died 70 years as month and date not named.

John Cagg the second time returned to infirmary May the 11th, 1860. Afflicted with the Palsy in the right hand and Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. See page 42 & 147 John Cagg applied to Directors for his discharged from the Infirmary which was granted on May 30th, 1861. Also he returns thanks for his kind treatment. The said palsy was a blow from his better half.

Mary Burns received into the infirmary June 8th, 1861 by order of the Trustees of Athens Township. Age 56 years. Birthplace the State of Pennsylvania. Has been a resident of Athens Township 15 years or more. Previous habits not good. Present condition helpless. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Mary Burns left the Infirmary June 13th, 1861 by notice from that the Directors have discharged her from all benefit at present.

Addison Rorick, son of Mary Burns, received into Infirmary June 8th, 1861 by order of the Trustees of Athens Township. His age is about seven years, has been in said township since his birth. Habits not established. Condition helpless. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Addison Rorick, son of Mary Burns, left the Infirmary with his Mother also discharged with her.

Mary Rollins received into Infirmary June 8th, 1861 by order of the Trustees of Dover Township. The said Mary Rollins was born in the state of Maryland 1831. Residence ten years in the township, Athens County, Ohio. Age 30 years. present condition destitute and sick with a consumption of the lungs. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Mary Rollins Husband applying for her discharged from infirmary which was granted by the Directors June 11th, 1861.

G. W. Smith received into Infirmary July 13th, 1861 by direction of the Trustees of Dover township. The said G. W. Smith was born in the State of Massachusetts, Age 36 years. Residence one day being transient. Present condition destitute and sick. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. G. W. Smith restored to health and discharged from the infirmary by order of Directors this July 23rd, 1861.

Joshua T. (or I. ) Barnes received into Infirmary August 17th, 1861 by direction of Trustees of Athens Township; the said J. T. Barnes was born in Wood County, State of Virginia, age 21 years. residence in said township nearly two years. Habits careless and heedless, being idiotic. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Joshua L. Barnes died November 2, 1874. Interred in grave No. 19, Range No. 3.

Richard P. Barnes received into Infirmary August 17th, 1861 by direction of Trustees of Athens Township. The said R. P. Barnes was born in Wood County, State of Virginia, Age 19 years. residence in said township nearly two years. Habits careless and heedless being idiotic. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Richard P. Barnes died Dec. 4th, 1903. interred in County Graveyard Post No. 54(?).

Catharine Brown received into Infirmary August 17th, 1861 by direction of Trustees of Athens township. The said Catharine Brown was born in Ireland, age 31 years. Condition; Fredirick Wm. Brown the husband and father just deceased leaving the family utterly destitute and Mrs. Brown in such condition she cannot be removed at present. Habits most praise, worthy, and industrious. Catharine Brown and family has received proper and present relief from the Superintendent of infirmary By order of the Directors.

Catharine Agusta Brown the daughter of Catharine Brown of Ireland, received into Infirmary August 17th, 1861 by direction of the Trustees of Athens Township. Levi Smith left the Infirmary to commence housekeeping June 14th, 1862. Being discharged by the directors having recovered his health.

Sarah Ellen Smith, wife of Levi Smith received into Infirmary August 24th, 1861 by direction of Trustees of Troy township. The said Sarah Ellen Smith was born in Harrison County State of Ohio, Age 45 years, habits industrious. Present condition healthy. Residence in Township with her husband seven years, has been warned out of said township twice. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. Sarah Ellen Smith left the Infirmary October 4th, 1861 by notice upon such the Directors have fully discharged her from present benefits.

William Courts was received into Infirmary the second time 21st of November 1859. Removing book? Goods and chattels, also being reinstated to my former privilege for my past service as a tailor and what I could do with my pen under the direction and inspection of Superintendents of said Infirmary and in full accordance with the certificate of the said W. Being the fourth time of her admittance and with the same papers here to fore presented and with full sanction of the Superintendent being a case that requires the largest indulgence. John Dee received into the Infirmary the second time September 21st, 1861 by direction of the Trustees of Athens Township. The said John Dee was born in Ireland, age 40 years. Residence in this township over 5 years. Previous habits intemperate. Present condition destitute with a bad leg received from a hurt. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. See page 4, 70 John Dee being found in a obscene situation was discharged from the infirmary by the Order of Directors for the above crime on the 3rd of March 1862. Returned on Oct. 11th, 1862. Discharged by the Directors Feb. 25th, 1863.

Peter Calentine received into Infirmary the second time September 26th, 1861 by direction of Trustees of Dover Township. The said Peter Calentine born in the State of Ohio, age 50 years, length of residence in said township six months. Present condition destitute but healthy. See page 24. Peter Calentine left the Infirmary June 11th, 1862 to commence housekeeping he finding suitable employment for keeping his children, he being discharged by the Directors from the Athens County Infirmary.

Martha Purdam returned to Infirmary November 21st, 1861 by her former papers, she being placed under the careful charged of Azel Keth in March 13th, 1860, by Directors and has become pregnant under his care and service which places her at present to the County Charge; further A. Keth, knowing when he took her, her mental capacity which required in him a Fatherly duty towards her; particular on his part. Entered by order of Directors. Hiram Fuller, Supt. See page 10 Martha Purdam gave birth to illicit female child February 27th, 1862 named Catharine Cora Purdam in the Infirmary. Cora Purdam died March 8th, 1866. Interred in grave No. 13, Range children’s row. Martha Purdam died Dec. 9th, 1897. Interred in County Graveyard Post No. 37.
